Cognitive Science Humor

At Stanford, there used to be a "Poli Sci" cafe with sandwiches that made reference to major figures from political science. For example, there was a "Rawls Sandwich," for which you assumed a veil of ignorance and were given a filling at random. This gave Tom Griffiths and I the idea of designing a cognitive science menu, the results of which, Shepard's Tables, can be seen here. The choice of which people and ideas to include was somewhat arbitrary, and some of the references are obscure, but hopefully it will make you laugh. Or at least hungry. We apologize to anyone we've offended, either by inclusion or exclusion. If you have additions send them to Tania (lombrozo at wjh.harvard.edu). Once I have a few I'll add an addendum.

And here's a t-shirt design I suggested for my undergraduate cognitive science major (symbolic systems). It was based on a series of jokes about chemistry, including the ever-popular "chemists do it periodically on the table." Mysteriously, my design wasn't the one selected.
