Connecting a Windows 95 printer to a networked printer via TCP/IP
Some printers in this building are not connected to the Novell network,
so the above procedure will not work. If a printer is connected directly
to the Harvard network, Windows 95/98 users can user HP JetAdmin software
to connect to these printers. The procedure is as follows:
- Download the HP JetDirect software from HP's website. As of
4/27/99, the software is available here.
- Double-click on the hpja95en.exe
file to unpack and install it. The installation process is
straightforward. You should have to restart your computer when the
installation process finishes.
- Go the the Start menu, select Settings, then
Printers.... Create a New Printer by double-clicking the
icon.
- Step through the printer creation wizard; when you are asked whether
you want to set up a local or network computer, choose Local
printer.
- Go back to the Printers... menu item, right-click on the newly
created printer, and select Properties.
- Select Details from the list of tabs. Click on the Add
Port... button. Select Others as your port type and select
HP JetDirect Port from the list (if it doesn't appear, reinstall
the software and try again).
- The HP Add JetDirect Port Wizard will start. Select Easy
Setup, then hit Next.
- On the next screen you will have to select the printer to which you
would like to connect; the best way to do this is by IP address. The
methods for finding a printer's IP address vary - on the new HP laser
printers, use the Menu button to select Information Menu,
then use the Item button to select Print Configuration. The
second page of the configuration should have the printer's IP address.
- Enter the IP address into the TCP/IP Address field, then click
Finish.
That should be it! You should now be able to print to the networked
printer. If you have questions or problems, please contact WJHCS.
