Using Fetch
- Enter the Fetch program (It may be in the Apple menu or Network
folder. If not, do a search on "fetch" from the finder using Find
from the File menu.)
- Enter the information requested. Normally the window pictured
below will appear asking for connection information. If this
window does not automatically appear, choose Open Connection from
the File menu.
For Host: enter the name of the machine you wish to
download from / upload to (eg. isr or wjh). User ID: and Password: are
your usual login name and password. If you are not sure what directory
you want, leave this field blank. You will have the opportunity later to
change directories. When you are finished, click OK.
Note: to switch from field to field, use the mouse or the tab key;
do NOT use return, as this will automatically select the OK button.
- When the connection is completed, the following window will appear:
- To download files from your account to your Mac:
- Locate the file(s) you would like to download. You can double click
on folder icons (such as the one next to "MyOtherDirectory" above) or
click on the large arrow above the window (next to "MyDirectory" above)
to move around your account.
- Click on the file that you want to download. It will be highlighted.
To select more than one file, click on the new files while holding
down the command (ie, open apple) key. To select a whole group of
continuous files, click on the first file, then click on the last
file while holding down the shift key.
- Click Get File... . You will be prompted for a place on your
Mac to put the file. Again, you can move around by double clicking
folder icons or by clicking on the large arrow above the file window.
When you have found a place for the file, and given it a name, click
Save.
- The cursor will turn into a running dog. When this cursor disappears,
your file has been downloaded. You should find it in whatever
location you selected.
- To upload files from your Mac to your account:
- This is very much the same as above, except that you click Put File ...
instead. You will be prompted for the file you wish to upload, as
well as for the name of the file to be saved on your account and
the format you wish to save it in. While the file is being uploaded,
the running dog cursor will appear, only it will go in the opposite direction.
- When you are finished with Fetch, choose Quit from the File menu.
