A Quick Guide to Eudora

Eudora is a mail application that runs on your personal computer. There are versions of Eudora Pro for both the Macintosh and Windows machines. Eudora accesses your UNIX account and downloads your mail for you so that you can read it and use in other desktop applications.

Checking and Receiving Mail

To check your mail manually:
  1. Choose "Check Mail" from the File menu.
  2. Type in your password (if the program asks for it.) The progress window will appear.
  3. If you don't have any mail, a "no mail" dialog will appear. Click "OK" to get rid of it.
  4. If you do have mail, Eudora will grab them one at a time. The "new mail" dialog will appear. Click "OK" to get rid of it.

To use automatic mail checking:

  1. Choose "Settings..." from the Special Menu.
  2. Click on "Checking Mail."
  3. Type in the number of minutes you want Eudora to wait before checking for your mail again. We recommend every 10 minutes.
  4. Click "OK" to close the dialog.

Eudora won't check for mail while you're using it to create a message or read mail. It has to sit idle for at least a minute before it starts checking mail again.

Creating and Sending Messages

  1. From the Message menu, select New Message.
  2. Type an e-mail address (or a nickname that you've created) in the To: field.
  3. Press [tab] to move to the Subject: field.
  4. Type in the subject of your message (optional but useful).
  5. Press [tab] and enter any other addresses you want the message sent to in the Cc: field (optional).
  6. Press [tab] and do the same for the Bcc: field.
  7. Press [tab] and begin typing your message.
  8. When you are done, click the Send button.
You can save your message at any time by choosing Save from the File menu, and your message will be saved in the Out mailbox. After you have saved it, you can reopen your message and continue working on it later.

Creating a Nickname

  1. Choose "Nicknames" from the Window menu.
  2. Click "New".
  3. Type the nickname you want to use in the dialog box.
  4. If you think you're going to use this nickname a lot, choose "Make Recipient", and Eudora will put it on the Quick Recipient list.
  5. Click "OK". The Nicknames window will come up with the new nickname selected and the cursor in the Address(es): box. Now type in the full address for the person you're nicknaming.
  6. Press tab to move to the Notes: field. You can enter useful information like phone and fax numbers here.
  7. Choose "Save" from the File menu.

To create a nickname from a message:

  1. Open the message whose sender you'd like to nickname.
  2. Choose "Make Nickname" from the Special menu.
  3. Continue from 3 above. Eudora will automatically enter the address from that message in the Address(es): field.

Attaching Documents to Your Mail

  1. While you're working on a message, choose "Attach Document" from the Message menu.
  2. Use the dialog box to choose the document you want to send.
  3. Click the Open button. The file will then be listed in the Attachments: field.

    • To send more than one attachment, repeat steps 1 through 3.

  4. When you are done writing your message, click the Send button.

What do I do when my inbox disappears?

Some of you might use Eudora at home and then check email from WJH only to gasp when you open your empty inboxes. Fear not--Eudora merely downloaded all of your mail to your hard drive at home. If you wish to check email from multiple locations you need to leave the mail on the server.
  1. To do this, open Eudora (you have to do these steps for every computer you use Eudora to check email from).
  2. Under the menu title "Special", select "Settings".
  3. In the left hand box, click on "Checking Mail"
  4. Click on the box for "Leave on server" (You can leave the box for however many days blank.)
  5. Now click "OK" and you're done.

For more information, check Eudora's help. If you have Balloon Help on your Macintosh, pull down the Balloon menu while in Eudora. It has a nice list of help topics there. Alternately, you can download the official manual produced by Qualcomm:
