The Harvard University Department of Sociology

Computing Resources

Sociology Department faculty, students and staff are welcome to take advantage of computing facilities in the department, many of which are provided on a building-wide basis. Department members are encouraged to stop by the Computing Office in 548/550 William James Hall for help and information.

Lab Desktop Systems
Computer Lab Systems in WJH are accessible via WJH-AD accounts. The three labs frequented most by Sociology personnel are 553 WJH, 626 WJH and 1301 WJH (a building wide facility.)
The Windows systems in 553 and 626 are configured identically, with the same suites of software installed on each. The same is true for the MacIntosh systems in the labs.
Each lab has a black and white laser printer; there is a color laser printer in 1301. Labs 553 and 1301 have sheetfed scanners. In addition in a small room just off WJH 553 there is a Windows system comparable to lab systems and this particular system may be reserved.

Active Directory Network
WJH-AD is the active directory network serving all three departments in our building. Network disk space and printing privileges are organized by department.

Unix Systems
Email, web serving, heavy statistical processing and custom data management -- all are reasons to take advantage of your access to Unix systems. There are two "log in" servers, used primarily for webwork, sometimes as a convenient pass through for files and for ready access to email via "pine." There is also a server dedicated to web-based research applications and statistical processing ( Stata 10 SE and SAS 9.1) -- described as a 4-Way 1.3-GHz UltraSPARC IIIi system with 8 gigabytes of RAM, this server is reached via login to research.wjh.harvard.edu -- contact staff if you'd like your account authorized for using this system.
