The Harvard University Department of Sociology

Queenie Zhu

Graduate Student in Sociology and Social Policy

Biographical Note

Queenie Zhu graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, San Diego with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Sociology and Human Development and a minor in Education Studies. Guided by Professors Hugh (Bud) Mehan and Jeff Haydu, her Sociology honors thesis explored stratification mechanisms “beyond race and class” in a socioeconomically homogeneous, newly-restructured urban high school, and investigated the powerful influence of social networks and social capital on students’ post-secondary trajectories. As an undergraduate, Queenie was also actively involved in research at UCSD’s Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment, and Teaching Excellence (CREATE). Prior to joining Harvard’s department, she worked at UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education, and Access (IDEA). Queenie’s academic interests include urban sociology, stratification and inequality, social networks, race and ethnicity, and education. Specifically, she is interested in employing mixed-methods to study the intersection of socioeconomic status, social networks, neighborhood, culture, and education, and how these are manifested in life chances.
