Van C. TranGraduate Student in Sociology and Social PolicyBiographical NoteVan is currently a PhD Student in the Joint Program in Sociology & Social Policy and a Doctoral Fellow in the Multidisciplinary Program in Inequality & Social Policy at the Kennedy School of Government. His research seeks to understand the incorporation of immigrants and their children in the U.S. (with a particular focus on second-generation Latinos), as well as its implication for intergroup relations, urban poverty and social inequality. At Harvard, he coordinates the Migration and Immigrant Incorporation Workshop, an interdisciplinary platform for graduate students and faculty members in the Greater Boston area to circulate work-in-progress in order to elicit feedback and suggestions for improving scholarly work. Last Fall, he co-organized an interdisciplinary graduate student conference - "Embracing Diversity: Latino Immigration and the Transformation of American Society", which brought together a group of graduate students and faculty members from across the country to discuss how the recent wave of Latino immigration has transformed the American mainstream. To date, his academic work has been generously supported by the National Institute of Mental Health, the Paul & Daisy Soros Foundation for New Americans, the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Van currently serves as the Senior Staff Tutor for the Senior Common Room and Resident Tutor in Sociology & Social Policy at Lowell House of Harvard College. 09/27/2008
