Una Kim

Graduate Student in Sociology

Biographical Note

Una is a doctoral candidate in Organizational Behavior and Sociology program at Harvard Business School and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Una's research interests include human capital development and knowledge production, innovation, economic development, globalization, organizations, and economic sociology. Una's dissertation research on human capital development of knowledge workers in China, India, and the U.S. examines the relationship between institutional contexts, human capital development, knowledge production, and innovation. As part of this research Una is currently working on two collaborative projects. The first project with Vivek Wadhwa and Gary Gereffi of Duke University is looking at how companies in India and China are training and developing their employees in the face of shortages of high-skilled talent. The findings of this study will be published in two reports by the Kauffman Foundation in June and September 2008. The second project with Yasheng Huang of MIT aims to understand the links between political institutions and managerial practices in India and China. The ideas from this project will be published in a Harvard Business Review article. Una's Masters Qualifying Paper is based on 43 in-depth interviews of MBA alumni women and argues that identity change processes can transform career goals and attitudes, that professional women's disinvestment from careers can be seen as the response to role strain and identity conflict, and that differences in career commitment and attitudes understood as the result of, rather than the driver of, career decisions. Una holds a Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, a Master of Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government, and a B.A. from Cornell University in Asian Studies. She previously worked in investment banking and private equity investment in New York City, Toronto, and Dakar. Una is married to Laurent and has a 2-year old son named Taeho. Una will be a Traveling Scholar in Beijing during the 2007-08 school year.
