Sabrina Huang

Graduate Student in Sociology

Biographical Note

Sabrina Huang was born in Taipei, Taiwan in 1984. She moved to Guan Zhou, China at the age of eight, and immigrated to Canada at the age of twelve. As a result of the multiple moves in her early life, she became fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, and English.

While completing her honors degree in sociology at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, Sabrina developed a strong interest in the studies of social stratification and inequality, including gender, race, class, and ethnic relations. During her undergraduate years, she focused on immigrant issues in Canada, such as discriminatory immigration policies, health and class disparities, and changing family patterns.

As a graduate student, Sabrina wishes to explore issues of social stratification and inequality in China. She is especially interested in the social integration of rural-urban migrant workers, the nature of women’s work in sexualized industries, and ethnic and regional conflicts in areas such as Tibet and Xinjiang.

Outside of academia, Sabrina enjoys spending time with her family and friends, playing squash, practicing yoga, meditating, painting in acrylics and oil, learning new languages, sewing, baking, and traveling.
