Biographical Note

Originally from rural western Tennessee, Steven received his B.A. from Princeton University in 2007. There, he majored in Sociology with a minor in African-African Studies, earning high honors from the Sociology department. After graduation, Steven returned to Princeton and worked for a year and a half as a Research Assistant on the the Texas Higher Education Opportunity Project. His previous research sought to examine how social connections affect the political identification of middle class African-Americans. In graduate school, Steven plans to conduct research on social stratification, networks, and mobility. He is particularly interested in studying racial identity, the impact of personal ties and family structure on social inequality, and the black middle class more generally.
