Biographical Note

Jesse grew up in Spokane and Chicago but has lived on the East Coast since attending Princeton, where he studied ancient history. After graduating, he worked for four years as a management consultant in New York City and Philadelphia before returning to school to pursue his academic interests.

Jesse's current work focuses on group identity and political mobilization among Muslims in the United States. Along with Peter DeWan, he is in the process of conducting qualitative research on the Muslim communities of Boston, Chicago and New York City. This research focuses on experiences with and perceptions of discrimination, patterns of self-identification, and group responses to rapidly changing social and political circumstances since September 11th.

The intersection of politics and religion. The relationship between political environments and the construction of group identities. Religion, memory and the dynamics of collective identity. Social movements, political sociology, race and ethnicity.
