Biographical Note

Originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Asad Asad is a first-year doctoral student in sociology. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and with comprehensive honors in May, 2011 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was also a Beinecke Scholar. Read a profile of Asad's undergraduate career here.

Asad's research interests encompass crime, law, and deviance; culture; inequality; international migration; political sociology; and public policy. Current research projects include: (1) a mixed methods analysis of the relationship between the private prison industry and unauthorized immigration to the United States; (2) a comparative study about the use of private security contractors as third-parties in international conflict; (3) an interview-based and ethnographic project that explores urban interventions and orientation toward civic engagement among urban youth using the Boston Debate League as a case study (with Monica C. Bell).

In his spare time, Asad volunteers with the Boston Debate League and serves as a member of the editorial board for the inaugural issue of the Harvard Journal of Middle Eastern Politics and Policy.
