Daniyal ZuberiWilliam Lyon Mackenzie King Research FellowBiographical NoteDaniyal (Dan) Zuberi is the William Lyon Mackenzie King Research Fellow for 2011-12 at the Canada Program at Harvard's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Dr. Zuberi received his Ph.D. in Sociology and Social Policy from Harvard and is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. While here Dr. Zuberi will offer two undergraduate courses (on Urban Social Problems, and the Sociology of Poverty). He recently completed a research project titled, "Outsourced: Hospital Support Workers in Vancouver". This project focuses on the experiences of hospital cleaners, food service, and other and other health care support workers in Vancouver area hospitals. The qualitative research involved indepth interviews with workers to learn about their work and quality of life as well as to evaluate the impact of new subcontracting arrangements on these employees, their families and the quality of health care in British Columbia. This project was funded by a SSHRC Standard Research grant (2007-2011). Currently he is building on the findings of this study to examine policies and program reforms to reduce hospital acquired infection rates, supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award (2011-2016). Dr. Zuberi is also beginning a new study titled, "Social Policy and the Working Poor: Longitudinal and Indepth Research on Immigrant Service Sector Workers in Vancouver" with the support of a SSHRC Standard Grant (2011-2014) and his CFI LOF funded "Qualitative Data Analysis Lab for Policy Research" (2011-2016). Another study examines the access and success of students from disadvantaged backgrounds to post-secondary education in Canada and the U.S. (supported by a SSHRC RDI grant (2010-2012) and Hampton Research Grant (2010-2012)). A book manuscript tentatively titled, "Urban Poverty in the Pacific Northwest: A Four City Comparative Study of Vancouver, Victoria, Seattle, and Portland" is in progress. 09/01/2011
