This page provides some files for the analysis of the hierarchical linear models in “Causal Hetereogeneity in Comparative Research: A Bayesian Hierarchical Modelling Approach.” American Journal of Political Science 42:1233-1259 (1998).

An interesting elaboration of the model involves drawing the random effects from a t distribution, instead of a normal. If there are outliers among the random effects, the t distribution will provide a robust estimate of the effects of the macro predictors:
