Biographical Note

PRUDENCE L. CARTER received her Sc.B. in applied mathematics-economics from Brown University (1991), her M.A. in sociology and education from Teachers College, Columbia University (1995) and her M. Phil. and Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University (1999). She completed post-doctoral work at the University of Michigan and joined the Sociology Department at Harvard as an assistant professor in 2001. Her publications have appeared in African American Research Perspectives, Ethnic and Racial Studies, Sociology of Education, Social Problems, and several book volumes.
Professor Carter's primary research agenda contends with prevalent cultural explanations used to explain mobility differences among various racial and ethnic groups. Her award-winning book, Keepin' It Real: School Success beyond Black and White (Oxford University Press 2005), discusses the intersections of race, ethnicity, class and gender and their influences on culture and academic achievement among low-income African American and Latino youths. Currently, Professor Carter is at work on three projects:

i. an international study of group dynamics within schools, culture, and mobility among youths in South Africa and the United States (with assistance from a postdoctoral fellowship award from the Spencer Foundation and a major grant from the William T. Grant Foundation);

ii. a multi-city study of how low-income families understand and use their earned income tax credits (EITC) with economist Jeffrey Kling and sociologists Kathryn Edin, Ruby Mendenhall, and Mignon Moore; and

iii. a study of race relations and boundaries among Christian conservatives with sociologists Paul Lichterman and Michèle Lamont.
