Biographical Note

ANTHRONY A. BRAGA is Lecturer on Sociology for the spring 2006 term. Dr. Braga is a Senior Research Associate and Lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. His research focuses on working with criminal justice agencies to develop crime prevention strategies to deal with urban problems such as firearms violence, street-level drug markets, and violent crime hot spots. He has served as a consultant on these issues to the Rand Corporation; National Academy of Sciences; U.S. Department of Justice; U.S. Department of the Treasury; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms; Boston Police Department; New York Police Department; and other state and local law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Braga was a key member of the Boston Gun Project / Operation Ceasefire working group that was responsible for reducing youth homicide in Boston by almost two-thirds during the late 1990s. The Operation Ceasefire program has received numerous prestigious awards including the International Association of Chiefs of Police Webber-Seavey Award for quality in law enforcement, the Police Executive Research Forum Herman Goldstein Award recognizing excellence in problem-oriented policing, and the Ford Foundation Innovations in American Government Award.

Dr. Braga has also been involved in a number of other strategic crime prevention programs such as the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Youth Crime Gun Interdiction Initiative and the U.S. Department of Justice-sponsored Strategic Alternatives to Community Safety Initiative and Project Safe Neighborhoods. He is also an affiliated faculty member of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center at the Harvard School of Public Health and was a Visiting Fellow at the National Institute of Justice of the U.S. Department of Justice. He received his M.P.A. from Harvard University and his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice from Rutgers University.

On January 29, 2004, Dr. Braga was the keynote speaker at The Boston Foundation's Community Safety Forum on Quality of Life in Our Neighborhoods: Successes and Challenges in Addressing Crime. You may listen to his remarks here.
