Visualizing Social Problems in Documentary Film and Photography (Soc 67)
Visualizing Human Rights and Social Change in Documentary Film Photography (Soc 167)
In these two courses taught by Prof. Tamara Kay, students are asked to visually document social problems and human rights issues in the world around them, while simultaneously learning what scholars have said about these problems. In their final projects, students combine academic research with involvement in their communities, producing projects that are both scholarly and socially meaningful. This site highlights some of these projects. The issues range from natural disaster response, to inequality of educational opportunity, to stereotypes in global tourism. The locations span from Guatemala, to rural Tennessee, to neighborhoods all over Boston. All of these projects represent the benefits of combining rigorous coursework with community involvement.
