Step One: Topic
Upper-level courses
You should have a good sense of what area(s) of psychology interest
you by taking Psy 1, the Sophomore Tutorial, and several tier 2 courses. To focus and refine your interests, you should
then consider taking more specialized, advanced courses. The Department
offers a number of upper-level undergraduate seminar-style courses,
as well as many graduate seminars (2000-level), which are often open to qualified
undergraduates. Such courses can give you the opportunity to interact
with faculty (potential thesis supervisors), gain a deeper knowledge of the
literature of and current research in your area, and gain skills useful in
conducting studies in that area. In addition, many of these courses will
require a research paper that could serve in part as a literature review
for a topic you might be considering for your honors project. In sum,
a careful selection of concentration courses that serves to focus your
interests and deepen your specific knowledge is one of the stronger ways to give yourself a solid foundation for your thesis or research project.
