Faculty & Research Opportunities
Faculty Research PossibilitiesBoard of Honors Tutors

The department encourages any interested student to explore being part of a research team while you are an undergraduate. Research gives you an appreciation for how psychological knowledge develops and allows you to become an active member of a community of individuals who share your particular curiosities about the world. In some cases, your research can culminate in an honors thesis or publication.

I. The department provides course credit for research through faculty laboratory courses, Psychology 910r, and for thesis writers Psychology 985 in the junior year and Psychology 990 or 992 in the senior year. In addition, some courses provide students course credit for serving as a study participant, through the department's study pool.

II. Departmental research is conducted in laboratories and research programs directed by the department's faculty, who have posted information on their own lab websites. On this website, they provide information specifically for undergraduates who wish to work with them - current research, requirements, opportunities and contacts. In many cases, undergraduates will work with a faculty laboratory under the direct supervision of a graduate student or other advanced researcher. Finally, specific research assistant positions supervised by faculty or graduate students are posted in the semesterly research listings.
The summer listings we do get have their own page.

III. The broader Harvard community includes many researchers in psychology and related disciplines who may be happy to supervise undergraduate research assistants. A subset of these researchers serves on the department's Board of Honors Tutors.

Many non-departmental researchers, both at Harvard and in the Boston area, provide opportunities to work in areas not represented within the department. during the acadmic year, posted here. Students wishing to obtain concentration credit for a volunteer position may do so by applying to register for Psychology 910r, Supervised Research - all 910r applications require the signature of a department faculty member (professor, associate or assistant professor) willing to serve as a Co-Supervisor.

IV.  Opportunities for funding more independent and complicated research are available from several sources at Harvard, including your research supervisor and the Student Employment Office (which administers the Harvard College Research Program and other funding sources). Also the college maintains a list of funding sources (please pay attention to the deadlines). Thesis writers may also apply to the Psychology Department for thesis grants.

V. Non-departmental research or psychology-related jobs received by the department are posted here, and are grouped accordingly for those open to undegraduates or those requiring a B.A. degree. Summer 2008 positions have their own page.  Interested students should check back periodically; students should also consult the Office of Career Services for their job postings.                     top
