Research Interests:
The Pomeroy lab is interested in understanding how brain developmental mechanisms become deranged to promote the growth of embryonal brain tumors.  We have shown in a mouse model that embryonal tumors arise from cerebellar progenitor cells in multiple steps involving dysregulation of developmental genes.  Using genomic and standard molecular biological methods to analyze developmentally regulated molecules in human medulloblastomas, we have identified the neurotrophic receptor tyrosine kinase TrkC, the sonic hedgehog pathway, Wnt and TGFβ as potentially critical elements in the genesis and progression of medulloblastomas.  We are testing the significance of these and other molecular developmental pathways in human cell culture and mouse tumor models.
