Graduate students in the social psychology program must complete:
- Psychology 2010, Proseminar
- Psychology 1951, Intermediate Quantitative Methods
- Psychology 1952, Multivariate Analysis
- Psychology 2100, Research Methodology
- Psychology 2500, Advanced Social Psychology
- Psychology 3420r, Research Workshop in Social Psychology, full year
- Three Core Seminars of their choosing.
The Advanced Course:
Students will take an Advanced Social Psychology course (Psychology 2500), which will provide intense coverage of topics that reflect the breadth of modern social psychology. The course will be taught each year, and will include a serious and rigorous examination.
The Core Seminars:
Students will be required to take three "core seminars" from three different members of the social psychology faculty. Two of these seminars must be completed before the end of the student’s second year, and the third seminar must be completed by the end of the student’s third year.
All courses above must be passed with a grade of B+ or higher.
First-Year Research Project:
Under the guidance of a faculty member who serves as mentor, students will participate in a research project and write a formal report on the research progress by May of the first year.
Second-Year Research Project:
Students will carry out an original research projecting leading to a written report in the ssyle of a journal article, and will make a brief oral presentation in the style of a conference paper to the full departmental faculty.
The Progress Report:
Students will submit a progress report at the end of their second year describing their research accomplishments, their professional goals, and other relevant information upon which they wish to be evaluated.
The Second Year Evaluation:
At the end of a student’s second year, the social psychology faculty will evaluate him or her. These evaluations will be based on three criteria: (a) the student’s research involvement and productivity, (b) the student’s competence in methods and statistics, and (c) the student’s demonstrable knowledge of social psychology. The faculty will adduce these by examining the students’ performance in the advanced social psychology course, the core seminars, the methods and statistics courses, and the student’s second-year progress report.
Thesis Prospectus:
A written description of the research proposal must be approved by a prospectus committee appointed by the CHD by the middle of the fourth year.
Thesis and Oral Defense:
Expected to be completed by the end of the fifth year.
