The Department research money is not guaranteed; the Department relies on some students having support from their advisors or other sources. The money can be used for second-year projects, thesis support, travel to scholarly meetings, etc. The money can not be used to reimburse other graduate students or to pay for ordinary expenses at the WJHCS. An application for the fund is available in the Business Office. The advisor's signature is needed, and original receipts for all purchases. We also need a statement of approval by the IRB for use of human subjects, or a statement from the student that no human subjects are used.
Graduate Society Fellowships, administered by GSAS, are available in several categories: summer or term-time pre-prospectus fellowships, dissertation writing, or dissertation completion fellowships. Watch for announcements in the spring semester.
Other sources. Both the Graduate Office and the Business Office try to keep abreast of other opportunities for research support. Announcements about competitions or fellowships are posted on the bulletin board opposite the Graduate Office, and there is a file in the Graduate Office with previous years' announcements and winning submissions, including for fellowships from NSF and DOD. Students thinking about applying for a federal grant should see Barbara Bontempo in the Business Office. There is also a library of fellowship material at the Office of Career Services in Byerly Hall. Students can make an appointment with Cynthia Verba, GSAS Director of Fellowships, to discuss their applications.
